Gana Koota an Important Factor in Hindu Marriage Match Making

Gana koota is an important factor in Hindu marriage match making system. You might have seen that parents or elders go to astrologer to match the kundlis of the boy and girl who are about to get marry.

The kundlis of both the boy and girl are matched by an astrologer to find out the common qualities in them. Astrologers consider Gana koota, one of the Ashtakoota while assessing gunas (favourable points) in the kundlis of the boy and girl.

According to Vedic astrology there are 3 types of Ganas. These are Devata, Manushya and Rakshasa Gana. These 3 types of Gana represent the human gunas namely Satva, Rajo Guna and Tamo Guna. Astrology says that the gunas give people different characteristics.

In this article we will discuss how an astrologer determines Gana of a person. Vedic astrology says that a person’s birth nakshatra determines his or her Gana. In this chart you can find out the Gana of a person born in a nakshatra.

At the time of marriage the kundali of the boy and the girl is matched on 8 important factors. This is also known as Ashtakoot Milan. Ashtakoot Milan helps us understand the strength of important relationship like marriage. Janam Kundali and Nakshatra are matched to make the life of bride and groom happy and peaceful.

If the Ashtakoot Milan is auspicious then it indicates a happy family. On the other hand if the Ashtakoot Milan is not up to the mark then there may be ideological differences between husband and wife in their married life, they may have trouble conceiving a child, or there may also be a lack of marital happiness. The 8 parameters of Ashtakoot Milan are determined based upon Janma Nakshatra itself.

Which are the 8 parameters

1 - Varna Milan
In Varna Milan the 12 zodiac signs are divided into Brahmins, Kshatriya, Vaishyas and Shudra Varnas. If there is a higher or similar character between the Varna of the boy and the girl, it is calculated as one Guna match, if none match then there will be zero Guna.

2 - Vashya Vichar
In this the zodiac signs are divided into different parts. If the Vashya of the boy and the girl is same then that means 2 Gunas have matched. If one is Vashya and other is Shatru then that implies only one Guna match. If one is Vashya and other is Bhakshak then ½ Guna is considered matched. If one is Shatru and other is Bhakshak then there is no Guna match.

3 - Tara Milan
In Tara Milan, calculation if done from the Nakshatra of the Boy to the Nakshatra of the Girl and vice versa. of Vaar is calculated from the constellation of the girl to the constellation. The number derived is then divided into 9 parts and then if the remainder is 3, 5 or 7 then Tara Milan is considered inauspicious.

4 - Yoni Vichar
Yoni is determined by the birth nakshatra of a native. It is auspicious for the bride and the groom to have the same Yoni. If there is a lot of compatibility it implies four Gunas are obtained, for basic friendship three Gunas are obtained, if both have similar nature then two Gunas, if there is routine hostility then one Guna and if there is complete enmity hen there is no point.

5 - Grah Maitri
When the Moon Sign of the bride and the groom are matched it is known as Grah Maitri. If both the bride and the groom have the same Moon sign or the Lords of Moon sign are friendly then entire 5 Gunas are obtained. If the Moon sign for one is friendly but other is neutral then 4 Gunas are obtained. If the Moon sign for both are neutral then 3 Gunas are obtained. If for one the Moon sign is friendly but for other it is enemy then only one Guna is obtained. If one is neutral and other is enemy then ½ Guna is obtained. Finally if the Lords of both the Moon signs are enemies of each other then 0 Guna is obtained.

6 - Gan Milan
According to astrology it is excellent if both bride and groom has the same Gana. In this situation there will be a loving and compatible relationship between the couple. A marriage is considered fair if one of the couple is a Devgana and the other is Manushya Gana. Astrology says that normally marriage can be fixed between Dev and Manushya Gana. But Rakshasa Gana is an inauspicious Gana for these 2 Ganas. It is not considered a good match if a Rakshasa Gana person marries a Deva or Manushya gana person. For the Rakshasa Gana, marriage should preferably be with the person of the same Gana.

7 - Bhakut Vichar
If the zodiac sign of the bride and the groom matches then 7 Gunas are obtained. Only if the Moons of both are placed at 1/7, 3/11 or 4/10 of each other only then 7 Gunas are obtained. If on the other hand the placement is at 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 then no Guna is obtained.

8 - Nadi Vichar
On the basis of the nakshatras in the horoscopes of groom and bride Nadis are classified. If the Nadis of the bride and groom match then it’s considered to be faulty. Hence the Nadi of the boy and girl should not be same.

How is Gan Milan done? Let's know about it in detail

Gan Milan is done on the basis of the Nakshatra at the time of boys and the girl's birth. A total of 6 Gunas are obtained when they match. This match is considered to be of great importance. If your Gan is Dev and your partner's Gan is Rakshasa, then the temperament of both of you will vary greatly. Due to this difference, there may be problems in adjustment and compatibility. The 27 nakshatras are divided into three equal parts which is Dev Gan, Manushya Gan and Rakshasa Gan.

Dev Gan

People who are born in Ashwini, Mrugashira, Revathi, Hast, Pushp, Punarvasu, Anuradha, Shravan, Swati Nakshatra belong to the Dev Gana Category. Dev Gana is considered to be auspicious. When a person has Dev Gana he is likely to behave as per the name given i.e. like God. People born under Dev Gana Nakshatra are mild, beautiful, compassionate, intelligent, simple natured, full of self respect, and scholarly.
When Guna Milan is done it is considered to be most auspicious if the bride and groom have the same Gan. When the Gan is same both husband and wife remain affectionate and compatible. If a person has a Dev Gan, then he can be married with the bride or groom of having Dev Gan.
Besides them Dev Gan natives can marry Manushya Gan natives too. This match is considered to be ordinary. After this there is one more match that of a Dev Gan native and Rakshasa Gan bride or groom as the case may be. This type of match will obtain no Gunas. This situation will be considered as Gan Dosh.

Manushya Gan

People who are born is Purva Falguni, Purva Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapad, Utara Ashadha, Utara Bhadrapad, Aadra, Rohini and Bharini Nakshatra are considered Manushya Gan.
Manushya Gan natives will have the characteristics of both Manushya Gan and Rakshasa Gan. This is so because a human being is such a creation that if he does good he can attain the stature of Dev and if he does bad he call be worse than a Rakshasa
A Manushya Gan Bride or Groom can be married to a Bride or Groom of either Dev Gan or Manushya Gan, but it would not be a suitable match with Rakshasa Gan. Once Gan matches a total of 6 Gunas are obtained. On the other hand when Gan does not match a solution is found for this Dosha and then the Dosha gets resolved.

Rakshasa Gan

All those who are born in Krutika, Magha, Ashlesha, Shatabhisha, Chitra, Jyeshtha, Dhanishta and Moola Nakshatra they all belong to Rakshasa Gan.
Those born under Rakshasa Gan will tend to get angry very easily. They are very stubborn and will not like to listen to others. The person may have tendency to pick up fights. He may also speak rudely.
